The origin of the Way to Santiago goes back to the dawn of the ninth century with the discovery of the tomb of Santiago el Mayor, evangelizer of Spain. The finding of this holy mausoleum is surrounded by rich popular imagery that has preserved and filled the historical narrative. There are no precise data on the circumstances of the discovery of the mausoleum, its discoverers considered this fact as a divine revelation of the establishment of the sepulchral cult to Santiago in the place where it was found.
