Easter Week processions

Semana-Santa-en-España-2016

No matter in which part of Spain you attend an Easter Week procession, an even if you are not catholic, you will come away with the sensation that you have e

perienced something truly unique. It should not be surprising to discover then that many processions have been declared of international touristic interest by travel agencies around the world. In both Castile and Andalusia, exquisite wooden sculptures of religious figures from the most ancient to the most modern are brought out from their enclaves to be admired and adored druirng their procession through the streets. But, while the sculptures themselves are well-worth seeing what it is truly unique is the collective transformation of the faithful and infidel as the procession passes. In Andalusian cities , there are occasionally pauses in the processions during which a song, known as a “saeta” is sung by one of the faithful. Equally beautiful and profound as the famous processions of Seville, are those in Zamora, Valladolid, Cordoba , Granada or Malaga to name just a few. However religious and solemn as the processions are, the associated celebrations mix without shame and with complete naturalness, the joy and spontaneity of life lived to its fullest.
