With a history dating back to Roman times Gijon, originally called "Gigia", is on the Asturian coast and features one of Spain's largest shipping ports. The earliest records of Gijon can be found in the fifth century when a settlement developed at Campa Torres and then moved coastward to what is now the city’s thriving port. The most popular walking route is the short trek around the old town on the headland called Cimadevilla. This route takes in all of the main historic sights by leading the walker along the marina’s side, then up to the highest point of a hill park, before descending and returning on a parallel path to a previously unseen part of the old quarter. This walk can easily be undertaken in an hour and covers most of Gijon’s heritage and cultural routes including the church of San Pedro, the Roman Baths, the original fishing village and the Revillagigedo Palace.

In the 15th century, Astorga was a vital stop on both the Roman silver route and the Camino de Santiago. It became one of the world’s main chocolate-making centers in the 17th century, and until the turn of the 20th century, there were 49 chocolate factories in Astorga alone. Today, confiterías still infuse the streets with their sweet aromas. One of the oldest towns in Castilla y León, Astorga still houses the vestiges of centuries of history, which seem to whisper from the walls that protect it. Modern sights include the fantastically odd Palacio Episcopal, a Gaudí masterpiece sitting atop this hillside city.
