Customized Travel / Spain by car / Castile & Extremadura
Castile & Extremadura 6 days
220 euros
(Madrid - El Escorial - Segovia - Ávila - Salamanca - Plasencia - Trujillo - Cáceres / Mérida - Toledo - Aranjuez - Madrid)
These two provinces are at the heart of Spain, both physically and emotionally. Extremadura was the land of the conquistadores of America, while Castile has traditionally been the motor, both economically and politically, of the extensive Spanish Empire. Both regions show the extensive presence of the Roman conquest and indeed, UNESCO recognizes these regions as containing a historical patrimony that has few rivals on the European continent.

You will meet the driver at your hotel and you will drive for almost one hour until you will arrive to the Monastery of El Escorial, located in the town of El Escorial. Here, you will visit the Monastery of El Escorial, an impressive building that contains a beautiful Monastery, a great library, and the main building which was the residence of the king Philip II until his death, at the time when the Spanish Empire reached its splendour. Also is the burial place of most of the Hapsburg and Bourbon monarchs. The town is located on top of the mountain range, with a great scenery too. You will return to Madrid after the visit.

AVILA

Avila is well-known for the intact medieval wall surrounding the city, for being the birthplace and home of Santa Teresa of Jesus (a devout Catholic nun famous for writing poems dedicated to Jesus to in which she expressed her devotion to Him) and for sweetmeats made by local nuns and sold in small shops throughout the city. Especially "yemas" made with egg yolks and sugar. A trip to Avila is a treat at any time of year, but we especially enjoy Avila in the freezing Winter temperatures or in the Autumn. Few cities and surroundings give you the opportunity to travel back in time in such a special way. Avila is declared  World Heritage Site.

SEGOVIA

- English Speaking Local guide for
  half day visit
- Entrance fees in the main

Segovia is one of Spain's most famous historic cities. It is located in the Castilla and León region just  an hour's drive from Madrid. The collection of historical monuments, their conservation together with its beauty make this an impressive city to visit. It was delared a World Heritage Site in 1985. Some of the surrounding villages, entrapped in small valleys within the canyons of the River Doratón also have superb Roman historical monuments to see. Segovia is a relatively small province and you can get to most of the nearby well known villages very easily but for those looking for something more peaceful off the main tourist route there are a number of lesser known but equally interesting villages.

SALAMANCA

The Tour Includes:
- English Speaking Local guide for
  half day visit
- Entrance fees in the main
  important monuments
- Taxes

The city is large enough to be able to offer the advantages of a real city, but at the same time it keeps the intimacy of a village. In Salamanca, the inhabitants speak the "purest" Spanish in Spain - Castilian. For this reason Salamanca is enormously popular with people all over the world who want to learn Spanish. Contacts are made easily. You don't have to make rendezvous as you are bound to see everyone in the Plaza Mayor, one of the finest squares in Spain and known as the living room of the Salamantinos. As there is such a varied range of nationalities, it is tempting to keep to fellow don Quijote students. Salamanca is however, a real university city, Spanish students are everywhere and you can go practically everywhere on foot. Salamanca is famous for its university, cathedral, home of the shell .. etc.

TOLEDO

The Tour Includes:
- English Speaking Local guide for
  half day visit
- Entrance fees to the Cathedral &

You leave early for Toledo, the old Imperial capital that is approximately an hour away from Madrid. The cathedral, one of the most important in Europe, the synagogues of Tránsito and Santa Maria la Blanca (one of the oldest in Europe), the house/museum of El Greco, the Santo Tomé church with its magistral work by El Greco,"The Burial of Conde de Orgaz", the San Juan de los Reyes church, a superb gothic structure built by the Catholic Kings, are all well worth visiting. After some leisure you will return to Madrid.
