UNESCO has also recognised the park as a Biosphere reserve. It is a wetland of international importance on the list of the Ramsar Convention. The park has a biodiversity that is unique in Europe, although there are some similarities to the Camargue, with which Doñana is twinned.  Doñana contains a great variety of ecosystems and shelters wildlife including thousands of European and African migratory birds, fallow deer, Spanish red deer, wild boar, European badger, Egyptian mongoose, and endangered species such as the Spanish Imperial Eagle and Iberian Lynx.

The Gruta de las Maravillas is located in the town and is one of the most spectacular cave systems in Spain. The caves are located below the hill on which stands Aracena Castle. The caves are said to have been found by a boy looking for a lost pig. Several caverns and lakes are linked by narrow passages. Coloured lighting adds to the effects of the unusual formations of minerals. In the complex is a geological museum.  It is also known for the famous ham produced in the region with the designation of origin Jamon de Huelva. It has cultural institutions such as the "Sierra de Aracena Theatre."
