Avila & Monastery of El Escorial (Full Day)

The Tour Includes:
- English speaking driver with private car (Local Guide optional)
- Entrance fees to the main important monuments
- Taxes

This most mystical of Castile´s cities is a continual surprise for the visitor. All its marvelous architecture is protected within romanesque walls of the 11th century, unique in Europe. The cathedral, begun in the 11th century, looks more like a fortress than a place of worship, necessary in its day as it formed part of the ancient defense system of the city. Among the numerous buildings, especially noteworthy are the Palacio de los Velada, the Verdugo and the Benavides, almost all are in the renaissance style and speak eloquently in stone of the role the city played in Spain's turbulent history. You will also visit the Convent of Santa Teresa, built on the site of the saint's birthplace, and the Basilica of San Vicente, just outside the walls, and one of the most beautiful romanesque constructions of the city. On leaving Avila, you will head for the Monastery of San Lorenzo del Escorial, whose construction was begun in 1563 by order of the powerful King Felipe II. This impressive complex, one of the largest in Spain, is a city in itself. In addition to possessing a beautiful church, a pantheon where the remains of most of the Spanish Kings are buried, there is a majestic library with valuable collections and a palace with the living quarters of the austere Felipe II, on whose Empire the sun never set.

Contacts are made easily. You don't have to make rendezvous as you are bound to see everyone in the Plaza Mayor, one of the finest squares in Spain and known as the living room of the Salamantinos. As there is such a varied range of nationalities, it is tempting to keep to fellow don Quijote students. Salamanca is however, a real university city, Spanish students are everywhere and you can go practically everywhere on foot. Salamanca is famous for its university, cathedral, home of the shell... About Madrid
About Aranjuez

In 1178 the area was acquired by the Order of Santiago. Ferdinand and Isabella, the "Catholic monarchs", converted Aranjuez into a Royal Site. It was the Spring residence of the kings of Spain from the late 19th century. During the reign of Philip II of Spain, in the second half of the 16th century, the Royal Palace was constructed, designed by Juan Bautista de Toledo and Juan de Herrera. About 200 years later the city of Aranjuez itself came into being during the reign of Ferdinand VI; previously, only relatives of the monarch were allowed to live in Aranjuez. In 1808 after the city revolted, Charles IV of Spain was forced to abdicate in favour of his son Ferdinand VII of Spain.Aranjuez was reached by a railway line to Madrid in 1851, the so-called Strawberry Train. In 1939 Joaquín Rodrigo composed the Concierto de Aranjuez, which would make Aranjuez famous all over the world.

About Chinchon

Historical documentation first appears in the fifteenth century, during the reign of Juan II, and it was in that century that King Enrique IV bestowed the title of "villa" - town - on Chinchón.The first Count of Chinchón was Fernando de Cabrera y Bobadilla, a title bestowed by Carlos V, although there can be no doubt that the most famous nobles were Francisca Enriquez del Rivera, Virreina (Vice-queen) del Perú, who discovered the curative properties of quinine (also called chinchona in her honour) and María Teresa de Borbón y Vallabriga XV, condesa de Chinchón, who was married to the statesman Manuel Godoy and immortalized by the painter Francisco Goya.Felipe V was proclaimed King in the square at Chinchón, and it was he who conceded the title "Muy Noble y Muy Leal" (most noble and most loyal) to the town, in recognition of its loyalty to the throne. Around 1840, Chinchón fell under the power of the Madrid government, and a few years later the "Sociedad de Cosecheros" (society of winemakers) was founded, this being the motor for the industrialization and economic progress of the town.In 1916 the King Alfonso XIII conceded Chinchón the title of city to reward its loyalty to the throne. Ten years later the Town Council was bestowed the title of "excellent".In 1974 Chinchón was declared to be of particular Historical and Artistic Interest.
